Episode Outline

"The past is history, the future a mystery, today is a gift thus we call it the present." This quote was said by Oogway in Kung Fu Panda and it is a basic philosophy that says what we should focus on is today because we already know what is behind us, we don’t know what will be in front of us. In this episode of "Heroes" entitled "I Am Become Death" the heroes and villains find out what is in store for them if the future is undisturbed. Mohinder discovers that one of the side effects of his version of the formula is a terrible affliction that looks a lot like scales all over his skin. In the future he is covered by shadows and it is assumed that the formula transformed him into a monster.

Tracy is involved with the first major bombshell of this episode. Tracy had two sisters, Niki and Barbara. While talking to Dr. Zimmerman she finds out that her ability is synthetic, it was created by Dr. Zimmerman and the rest of the Primatech founding twelve to give the people of the world abilities. Tracy at first is mad that someone would willingly do this to her. She pleads with the doctor to have it taken away because she says that she has hurt people and doesn't want this power, she grabs Dr. Zimmerman's arm and her freezing ability spreads up his arm but she releases it after a few seconds.

Tracy, finally figuring out about her ability, decides to turn herself into the authorities about killing the newspaper reporter in the parking lot, but she freezes the phone as she is crying. Feeling alone and afraid of her powers she feels the need to end her life and jumps off of a bridge in Washington DC, Nathan is there, however, to save her from a wrongful death. Nathan takes Tracy to his apartment and she tells him that he can fly and she tells Nathan that she can freeze anything she wants, which shocks Nathan.

In the future Nathan is the President of the United States and after Sylar blows up Costa Verde, Tracy and Nathan issue a joint statement at Pinehearst. Tracy is the first lady of the United States and Nathan and Tracy say that they send their deepest condolences to the victims of the tragedy. Nathan goes to the morgue where it is said that Future Peter has died and is greeted by the Present Peter. Peter has absorbed Sylar's main ability at this point and he kills Nathan.

Future Peter transports Present Peter to the future that he is trying to prevent and Present Peter sees what he has in store for himself. Everyone in the world has abilities of some sort and in the future it is available via injection "at a price for anyone who can afford it, or for grabs if you are desperate enough." Future Peter tells Present Peter that he made too many mistakes and that someone in the real present is putting together a formula that gives people abilities. Future Peter entrusts the good Present Peter to stop that from happening.

While both of them are in an alley Future Claire comes from behind and shoots the Future Peter, she is also working with the Haitian who Present Peter hits over the head while running away from Future Claire's bullets.

In the future Claire, Daphne and Knox team up together along with the Haitian, Matt and Molly to try and stop Peter from hurting anyone else. Present Peter goes on Future Peter,s orders to look for Sylar, located in the old Bennet House where he finds a changed man. Sylar is a father of a boy named Noah and has Mr. Muggles, Claire's dog, as a pet, he is shown cooking for his son with glasses on and a apron with "Hail to the Chef! on it commemorating Nathan as the President. Sylar says that he was able to control his abilities and wants to live a normal life. Peter won't accept that and tells Sylar that he came for his ability. Sylar issues Peter a warning that it isn't as great an ability as he thinks. Sylar says with his ability comes the hunger that he finally has under control and it will ruin Peter.

Claire and Knox come to kill the Present Peter and end up taking child Noah as hostage. This forces Sylar to go mad and eventually uses the radioactivity that he gained from Ted Sprague to blow up Costa Verde and everyone in the area except for Peter.

In the future, Matt has a child with Daphne and takes care of Molly, but even Matt can't save Daphne as she arrives at the door of their apartment she dies in Matt's arms. Matt wakes up from his vision of the future and Usutu tells him that to finish his journey he must seek the help of his totem. The totem is an animal of sorts that will guide him in the right direction, in this case the turtle.

In the present Hiro and Ando are stuck in Level 2 until they see Angela. She tells them that they are going to help bring the formula back. She tells him that he has the key to the entire mystery. So what does Hiro do, dig up the body of his former adversary from a season ago, Adam Monroe aka Takezo Kensei. Adam isn't too pleased to see Hiro, but Hiro knows that he must work with his former rival to save the world one more time.
